What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown fits over a badly decayed or damaged tooth to protect and strengthen it. It supports oral health by restoring your ability to chew comfortably and giving the tooth a second chance. Crowns are ideal when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but still has enough structure to be preserved.

Dr. Mahooti will conduct a thorough examination and consultation to determine if a crown is the right solution for your dental needs. If you are considering treatment, schedule a visit to discuss your options. She might recommend a crown for several reasons, including:

  • Prevent further damage to a cracked tooth
  • Restore a tooth with severe decay
  • Support a tooth with a large filling
  • Strengthen worn or broken teeth
  • Strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Conceal a discolored or misshapen tooth
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Restore a dental implant’s function and appearance

The Dental Crown Process

Receiving a dental crown requires our team to administer local anesthesia to numb your tooth and the surrounding area. Once you are comfortable, your dentist will begin removing the decayed or damaged portions, leaving as much healthy structure intact as possible.

Then the tooth will be filed down to ensure a proper fit once the dental crown is in place. Since this process takes two appointments, we’ll finish your initial visit by taking digital impressions for lab technicians to create your crown, and we’ll fit you with a temporary restoration to wear between appointments.

During this time, you will need to follow your post-treatment instructions to keep your temporary in place.

After a few weeks, you will return to our office to have your new dental crown seated and bonded in place.
