What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a long-lasting tooth replacement that provides a stable foundation for chewing, speaking, and smiling confidently. By integrating with your jawbone, an implant stops bone loss, protects remaining teeth, and supports facial structure to avoid a sunken or aged appearance.
A dental implant is an innovative tooth replacement consisting of three pieces:
- The Implant Post — An implant is a small screw-like post our periodontist places surgically in the jawbone. Over the next several months, bone and tissue surround and fuse with the post as it heals, known as osseointegration, creating a strong foundation for a replacement teeth, such as a crown, bridge, or denture.
- The Abutment — After implant healing, we attach a small connector called an abutment to the top of the implant post, connecting the implant to the replacement tooth.
- The Restoration — In the final step, we securely attach a custom crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment. Our dental lab customizes your restoration to match the color, shape, and size of surrounding teeth for a seamless, natural-looking result.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Our dental implant team, led by Board-Certified periodontist Dr. Ivana Yi and restorative dentist Dr. Sheila Mahooti, is committed to providing personalized solutions that cater to your needs. While each treatment varies based on the patient, there are four foundational steps to every dental implant process:
- Initial Consultation: At your initial consultation, Dr. Yi and Dr. Mahooti will help create your treatment plan as well as determine whether you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
- Surgery: As a Board-Certified periodontist, Dr. Yi is highly skilled in the art of dental implant placement, making your surgery a breeze.
- Healing & Abutment: After surgery, you will undergo a healing period of between three and six months. This is also when the implants will fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. After this occurs, our team will attach small metal connector pieces called abutments to your dental implant that will secure the restoration in place.
- Restoration: After we receive the final dental restoration from our laboratory, we will attach the custom replacement teeth to your dental implants to complete your smile.
